On Monday’s Gill Report – broadcast live on WETR 92.3 FM in Knoxville – Tennessee Star Political Editor Steve Gill was dismayed by the media’s ability to say anything as a reason to criticize president Trump in the time of John McCain’s death.
Apparently, following flag flying protocol just wasn’t enough. Gill went on to talk about Senator McCain’s passing and his true feelings he expressed during a 2010 campaign message where he was more than enthusiastic about “building the wall”. However, only when it served his re-election.
Gill continued:
John McCain’s passing has been met with a lot of disputes within the Republican party not the least at which has been a furor over the flag over the white house flying at half-mast for two days. Well lowering the flag for two days when a member of the Congress or top leader in government dies is the protocol set forth in the US code. You lower the flag for two days and then it goes back up to full staff. Which is exactly what the White House did. It wasn’t an attack on John McCain, it wasn’t a way to diminish his value they followed the rules, the protocol of what you do.
Now the Congress has different rules. When one of their members dies they lower the flag over the US Capital until that member is buried. So, the flag over the Capitol is still at half mast while the one over the White House has been raised back to full staff. Not anything that should be worthy of dispute except for the “Hate Trump Media” and those in the ‘Rhino Love McCain Hate Trump, Never Trumper’ class that are wanting to attack President Trump over, yet again, nothing.
Now it’s also interesting that John McCain, from the grave takes a final shot at Donald Trump with a statement that his team issued when McCain and his final words says, “we weaken our greatness when we hide behind walls.” A clear shot at President Trump and the build the wall campaign. But John McCain said something entirely different back in 2010 when he was running for re-election in Arizona. When he was claiming we need to “build the wall!” He even did an ad where he’s walking along the border with Sheriff Paul Balbo an Arizona Sheriff saying “build the wall.”
(Audio plays) Drug and human smuggling, home invasions, murder, were out manned, with all the illegals in America, more than half come through Arizona. But we got the right plan, the plan is perfect. We bring troops, state, county and local law enforcement together and complete the dang fence. It will work this time. Senator you’re one of us. I’m John McCain, and I approve this message.
“Yeah, so, when he’s running for re-election and needs the votes of those in Arizona who are concerned about our lack of border security, John McCain back in 2010 saying ‘BUILD THE DANG WALL!’” Gill said; adding:
This is the guy that kept us from building the wall. And now as he takes a final shot at Donald Trump he condemns building walls and securing our borders.
This is why a lot of folks on the right can revere John McCain’s service in the military and yet find him less than honorable in his service in the US Senate.
Rest in peace Senator. But we still know who you were.

If I had to chose between being a dead vengeful John McCain and a live criticized President Trump, I chose to be alive. A year from now I will not be able to remember McCain’s first name. Five more years of a Trump Presidency and McCain will be a distantly remembered speed bump in the way of the MAGA movement.
